Ahmed Ali (1923–2016) learnt photography through an aunt’s prescient gift—a box camera pressed into his hands on the eve of his departure for boarding school. He was eleven. What might have remained a schoolboy’s curiosity instead became a lifelong practice. At school, he discovered he could both make and sell photographs, emboldened by a principal willing to sacrifice campus space for a darkroom, and sustained by his mother’s belief in his talent, which manifested as a gift of a better camera. By college, Ali held an established place in Calcutta’s photography circles, co-founding The Photographic Society. Formal education held no appeal; he decided to turn professional instead.
By seventeen, Ali was working for the renowned photo studio Bourne & Shepherd in Calcutta, assisting one of their senior photographers. In 1948, he established his own studio, Universal Camera Arts, in central Calcutta, positioning himself at the forefront of a post-war boom in advertising and commercial photography. Among his earliest commissions was documenting the Tata Steel Plant, work that proved pivotal in inaugurating a prolific career as a pioneer of industrial photography. Over the next four decades, Ali became the photographer of choice for major industrial conglomerates, building an unmatched oeuvre that recorded manufacturing, corporate enterprise, brand campaigns, and architectural sites across India.
Beyond these commercial briefs, he remained a keen visual chronicler. His travels produced informal portraits, landscapes, and an extensive personal study of tribal life in the Bastar region between 1956–1963—photographs that revealed the breadth of his vision.
