History

Photoink was established in September 2001 by Devika Daulet-Singh as a photo agency and a publication design studio. As a photo agency, we produced and presented contemporary Indian photography across the international media. Pursuing editorial assignments for international magazines provided one kind of avenue for photographers to show their work. There was also a need to develop an audience in India and abroad for their personal work through exhibitions and photo books, which we started publishing in 2004. Works by our photographers have been exhibited at many international photography festivals and museums across the world.

In 2008, we opened a gallery in Jhandewalan, New Delhi, which was technically equipped to present both contemporary and vintage photographic works. We represent some photographers as their primary gallery as well as present guest artists from the international world of photography. Our represented photographers/artists include Roger Ballen, Richard Bartholomew, Pablo Bartholomew, Madhuban Mitra & Manas Bhattacharya, Kapil Das, Chandan Gomes, Srinath Iswaran, Max Kandhola, Anita Khemka, Madan Mahatta, Dhruv Malhotra, Martin Parr, Dileep Prakash, Raghu Rai, Ketaki Sheth and Vivan Sundaram. We have also exhibited renowned international photographers such as Samuel Fosso and Snowdon.

Apart from presenting exhibitions, we also undertake indexing and cataloguing for old archives. In 2008, we digitized and indexed the vintage archives of Umrao Singh Sher-Gil and published a monograph on his photographs. In 2009, we collaborated with Steidl, the renowned German publishing house to create Steidlville, New Delhi within the gallery premises.

In February 2015, Photoink relocated to larger premises in Vasant Kunj, New Delhi. We continue to be a flag bearer for photography in India.
